How long after rain can you paint a house exterior?
No fixed wait works for every house. Learn when siding is dry enough to paint after rain, and how temperature and dew affect exterior work in Westchester.

The short answer: After a heavy rain, allow at least a day of good drying weather as a starting point, then check the actual surface. Shaded wood siding and trim can need longer. A dry-looking wall, a sunny forecast, or a fixed 24-hour rule cannot tell you whether trapped moisture has cleared.
For homes in Westchester, NY, the ready-to-paint date can differ from one side of the house to the next. A south-facing wall may dry while the north side, porch, and joints around windows remain damp. The coating's instructions and the weather during application and drying matter just as much as the time since the rain stopped.
How do you know the siding is dry enough?
Before painting, check the surface you will actually coat, especially bare wood, end grain, seams, and shaded areas. If wood feels damp or a moisture check shows it is still wet for the selected primer or paint, give it more time. The acceptable condition depends on the substrate and the specific product; ask your painter how they verify it.
Wood and masonry absorb more water from a soaking rain than vinyl or aluminum. Wind, sun, temperature, and shade all change the drying time. Sherwin-Williams' exterior application guidance recommends at least one day after heavy rain but stresses that the surface must be dry before painting. That is a starting point, not a promise that every wall is ready the next day.
What if the house was pressure washed?
Washing adds water to the siding, trim, and gaps. Build a drying window into the project instead of painting as soon as the face looks dry. Our guide to pressure washing before painting explains why cleaning and drying are separate steps. If a shaded section remains damp, work can move to another ready area or wait.
Painting over moisture can lead to poor adhesion, blistering, or peeling later. Taking another day to verify the surface is usually less disruptive than repairing a failed coat.
Check the forecast after painting, too
The surface must be dry before application, and the fresh coating needs conditions that meet its product data sheet after application. Check the air and surface temperatures, expected rain, humidity, and the time before evening dew. A warm afternoon can still turn into a cold, damp night while the paint film is forming.
Do not assume every exterior paint needs the same 50°F minimum or the same number of rain-free hours. Some products allow lower temperatures or develop rain resistance sooner than others. Those claims apply to the named product under its stated conditions; they do not make wet siding ready to paint. Benjamin Moore's temperature guide also emphasizes surface temperature, humidity, and rain alongside the forecast air temperature.
Direct summer sun can heat a dark wall well above the air temperature. In spring, pollen can settle on a fresh finish. In fall, shorter days and earlier dew narrow the work window. The best date is the one that gives each elevation enough time to dry and the selected coating the conditions it requires.
Can you paint the day after rain?
Sometimes. One dry day after a heavy rain is a reasonable earliest checkpoint, not a universal go-ahead. If the wall is still damp, the next night will fall outside the coating's temperature range, or rain and dew arrive before its specified drying window, postpone that area. If the surface is dry and the product directions and forecast line up, the next day may be suitable.
Ask your contractor which primer and finish they plan to use, how they will check damp wood, and what happens to the schedule if a shaded wall needs more time. Our exterior painting schedule guide covers how preparation, drying, and weather fit into the broader project.
